Assignment 6: Trailer Exhibition Research

1. What's  the purpose of trailers?
  • The purpose of trailers are to tease the audience by showing the most important parts of the film but without revealing to much information so that the audience want to go watch the film.

2. How do audiences watch trailers? Give examples – it’s a big range!

  • On YouTube
  • On the Tv
  • On Most Social Media Sites
3. Where do audiences go and what type of platforms do audiences use to watch trailers?
How do audiences engage with trailers?
  • Audiences go onto the internet and they will interact with many different trailers whether it be on a social media site or on youtube.
  • The engagement that audiences have with trailers is positive because they can share it via facebook or re-tweet it on twitter.

4. What is the relationship between exhibition platforms for trailers and audiences; are certain platforms for certain types of audiences?)
  • Most audiences will be able to watch every trailer as all trailers will be rated U this is due to the fact that children could easily go online and have access to all trailers meaning that if the trailer was rated 18 they could have access to it.
  • A film that is targeted for children may be shown on social media sites in order for parents or family members to be able to see them but most likely they'll be shown on tv where the children have more access to them.

5. How do institutions encourage audiences to ‘investigate’ a film’s details.
  • Usually at the end of each trailer they will promote the release date and the film site which will have competitions games qnd more background information about the making if the film, and they also have a section where people will be able to rate the film

6. Explain the role of social media for trailers  (advantages/disadvantages)
  • Advantages:
  • A lot of people interact with social media sites (theres a bigger chance to watch the trailer)
  • Audiences can access the trailer easier they can share it between their friends and share their own personal opinion
  • Disadvantages:
  • Everyone has access meaning that children have an easier way of watching a trailer which they may like but then the film will be rated 15 or 18 which is above their age rate
  • Some people may share negative comments about the trailer which other people will see and may begin to have the same opinion (this could have a big impact at the box office if bad reviews are being shared)

7. Imagine trailers could not be exhibited via social media, what impact would this have on audiences and institutions?
  • The impact that this would have on audiences would be that it wouldn't be as easy for them to watch the trailers and for the institution would not have as much audience because they would have to research it themselves.
  • The audiences would not be able to interact with the film by going on the film site and playing games and competitions through having seen the trailer.
8. How has the exhibition of trailers changed over time?
  •  Before trailers used to be quite straight forward and just show the important parts in the film, but nowadays they go to a different extent for example they prank real life people and have actors playing along just to have better reactions.
  • Also nowadays trailers give the audiences bigger enigmas which will make them watch the film.
9. How are trailers rated and regulated?  What institution is responsible for rating trailers?  How is this different from the whole film?
  • Trailers don't have a rating because of easy access from children. meaning that if they were rated it would restrict the audience amount and also children would be able to watch a trailer that is not adequate to their age.
10. How does the rating of film trailers affect a range of audiences?
  •  Films are rated differently in each country depending on the language used, violence, sex scenes

11. Identify or explain any other issues you think are important about exhibition of film trailers.

  • The producers are so keen to make the audience watch the film so they reveal to much enigmas and show to much information which makes me not want to watch the whole film as it has been ruined.

Assignment 1: A2 Student Trailer Research/Analysis

Disturbed
WWW: Good use of transitions at the beginning (showing time pass by). The setting was appropriate and well thought for the trailer.
EBI: There was some non-diegetic music in the middle as it becomes boring. Some issues with sound being echoey.
INSPIRATIONAL:I really liked the camera effect which made it seem like it was cctv watching them. I really liked the mirror scene and how they portrayed by fading to back then to the girl.
GRADE:C2

Vendetta
WWW: The beginning was good as it allowed the audience to understand hat was going on from the start.
The use of black and white during the flashbacks was effective as it shows the audience that it is in the past
EBI: There was dialogue
INSPIRATIONAL: The voiceover was very effective throughout as it explained the whole story
GRADE:3c

The 11th Day
WWW: The use of camera angle and movement were very effective especially when he jumps over the fence
I thought that the CGI's used were very effective as they made all the explosions seem very realistic
EBI: Some of the dialogue was more clear
INSPIRATIONAL: I found that the news report on the TV made the trailer seem very realistic
GRADE:3b

The Marksman
WWW: The beginning was good as the voiceover was playing before any image, therefore the audience knew what was happening before even seeing anything.
EBI: The use of camera was still (some bits are to shaky)
INSPIRATIONAL: The use of point of view when the boy shoots the other one
GRADE:2a/3c

The Comedown
WWW:I found the voiceover at the beginning of the trailer very effective as it allowed the audience to understand what the boy was going through.
I found that the titles at the end were very well put in as it fit the trailer perfectly.
EBI: The fighting scene was more natural (made the punching sound more realistic)
INSPIRATIONAL: The shot of the zoom in of the boy taking the tablet was really effective because its a big part of the whole trailer and its much more effective rather than it being a whole body shot
GRADE:2a/3c

The Paralysis
WWW:I found the storyline very effective a child is the main character showing that the child is more vulnerable.
I found that the use of volume control of the non diegetic sound effect  when the image appears was really well used as it makes the audience jump.
EBI: The ending could have been more effective and improved.
INSPIRATIONAL: I really like the good use of volume control
GRADE:3c

Filming Techniques

This video taught me all the different camera angles and different techniques i can use to make my filming better.

This video taught me how to film a driving in a car scene without actually driving a car.

Trailers

Another Cinderella Story (2008)

This is a comedy/romance/musical
I find this trailer very effective because it’s a modern re-make of Cinderella.

Monster-In-Law (2005)

This is a comedy.
i find this trailer effective because there is a reinforced stereotype of mothers in laws being evil and that is clearly portrayed in this trailer.
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous

This is action/comedy/crime.
I found this trailer effective because the hybrid of subgenres all fit in very well and are well presented in the trailer.
Action and comedy is used as the main character is an FBI.
Comedy is used because she goes undercover and she is a pageant queen and a FBI which don't usually mix.

4 Weddings And A Funeral (1994)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JMuyzm3JRU

This is comedy/drama/romance
The voiceover is very effective as it explains each character and is also very comic
The titles are very brief but they explain each scene

Hamburger Hill (1987)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dD8JsqTcZoc

This is a drama/war/action
the non-diegetic sound effects of the machine guns were very realistic

America Sweethearts (2001)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMwLLQsCzPo

This is a comedy/romance

The storyline is very interesting
The non-diegetic score music fits in perfectly

My Chosen Subgenre Is Drama

The purpose of a drama film is usually to move the audience emotionally, this happens when the story is intense and the audience can relate to it by relating to the characters and situations being put in place.

1)City Of Angels (1998)

This is a drama/fantasy/romance.
What I found interesting about this trailer was the whole story line, because the "angels" are there but they are only visible by the audience, therefore the shots and different camera angels used were very specific in order to make it obvious that only we could see them.

2)17 Again (2009)

This is a drama/comedy/fantasy.
This has a really different story line to other films, as he goes back in time as a person but still lives in the same year, making him a new person to everyone around him.

3)Circle Of Lies (2012)

This is a drama.
I liked the fact that its a high school setting, meaning that its easier to relate with.
The meaning behind this trailer is to not trust your friends.

4)Preacher's Kid (2010)

This is a drama.
This trailer is very effective as it has a deep meaning behind it which is the fact that at the end of the day whatever happens family will never give up on you even when everyone else does.
